Mathematics
“Students should learn how to do math, but should also learn what math does” (Ben Black, 2006-2007 Georgia Tech STEP Teaching Fellow). At Tech High, math is taught with an emphasis on students learning to speak the language of math. Understanding key vocabulary terms and using them properly provide the foundation upon which real-world problem solving and critical thinking skills can then be developed.
Math 1 (1 credit)
In this course our students focus on Algebra, Geometry, and Statistics. This core course satisfies one of the Math requirements toward graduation.
Math 2 (1 credit)
In this course our students focus on learning Algebra, Geometry, Statistics, and Trigonometry through Georgia's new integrated math curriculum. This course satisfies a math requirement towards graduation.
Algebra II (1 credit)
This course extends Algebra I by using the principles and reinforcing problem solving, communication, reasoning and connections. The following are emphasized:
1) Equations and inequalities 2) Functions, domain, range, and graphs
3) Systems of equations & inequalities 4) Matrices and determinants
5) Polynomials & rational expressions 6) Irrational and complex numbers
7) Quadratic functions 8) Polynomial functions
9) Sequences & series 10) Probability & statistics
Statistics (1 credit)
In this course our students focus on applying probability and statistics to real world situations through lessons on social justice, games of chance, experimental design, and business applications. This course satisfies a math requirement towards graduation.
Calculus (1 credit)
In this course students study differential (slope of a curve, mathematics of moving objects) and integral (area under curves and of solids) calculus. This class is either an elective or core course to satisfy one of the Math requirements toward graduation depending on the student’s graduation needs.
Hands-On Project
Mr. Potts' Algebra II class during the previous school year had the opportunity to venture outside and construct elipses and circles using string and chalk.
