Social Studies
The goal of the Tech High School social studies department is the development of perspective on many facets of the human experience. Skills essential to this study are emphasized and reinforced at every grade level: gathering and interpreting data; analysis of concepts; synthesizing material; and supporting generalizations. In that critical evaluation and intelligent expression are an essential part of the learning process, each student is expected to learn to read perceptively and express their thoughts in a logical manner that involves advocacy of evidence Responsible citizenship in the modern world has its foundation in the awareness of the complex issues that confront society. One of the main functions of the social studies department is the study of contemporary issues within a historical context for “one who does not remember their past is condemned to repeat it”.
United States History (1 credit)
United States History is designed to provide students an in-depth experience focusing on the events, participants, patterns, and relationships of our nation from Colonial Times to the present era. The course is designed to prepare students for the United States History End of Course Test and the Georgia High School Graduation Test in Social Studies.
World History (1 credit)
World History engages the students in the study of the human past within a global context. By utilizing recurring historical themes, critical thinking, and scholarly methodologies, students will acquire, organize, interpret, apply, and evaluate historical information.
Economics (.5 credit)
Economics is a 9-week college preparatory class. This course fulfills one of the graduation requirements for Social Studies as established by the Georgia State Department of Education. The course provides students with a basic foundation in the field of economics. The course has five sections: fundamental concepts, microeconomics, macroeconomics, international economics, and personal finance. In each area, students are introduced to major concepts and themes concerning that aspect of economics.
United States Government/Civics (.5 credit)
This is a nine-week college preparatory course. This course fulfills one of the graduation requirements for Social Science established by the Georgia State Department of Education. The course will provide students with an understanding of the philosophy, functions, and structure of the United States government and its relationship to the American citizen.
